Call No Man Your Father, this been the blight of the Church and its leadership in every generation. These words were addressed to the disciples and the crowds that had gathered around. The Jewish religious leaders divorced morality and religion, and insisted that men should respect their office, whatever might be their personal character. The craving for this has been the temptation and bane of Christ’s ministers in every age. – F.B. Meyer on Matthew 23

Call No Man Your Father
Our Father in Heaven, here we find a noun. Father here just isn’t a reference to a person; but to the position of the one you’re speaking about. The main operative subject is Father and the main place to which he is found is in heaven. He is Father, but not only your Father. He is the Father of all Spirits and the Father and God of all. He is simply put, the Father and creator of you. He is therefore both Father in respect of being your Father who begot you and Father of all.
Joh 15:1-5
(1) I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
(2) Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
(3) Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
(4) Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
(5) I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Scripture My Father is the husbandman
Everything flows in and through Him. This includes life itself, all created spirits, all principalities and powers, and all authority. It is therefore through the Father and through His Son Yeshua; Jesus Christ that we find redemption, salvation, blessing, and cursing. Deuteronomy chapters 27-30 discusses the blessings and curses Israel would face. Blessing for obedience and curses for disobedience. While we live in the time of grace and mercy, finding redemption through Jesus Christ by Faith, these blessings and curses have not gone away.
If we as a Christian do sin, we can confess that sin; and receive forgiveness; read 1 John chapter 1; verses 7-9. If you fail to confess your sins or continue to walk in a disobedient manner, then God will chastise you. We have plenty of teaching of God dealing with us as Sons. As many as God loves, he rebukes and chastens. Paul listed the fruits of the Spirit, the deeds of the flesh, and that Christians must walk in the Spirit. Those who walk in the flesh will find corruption. The whole essence of our relationship to our Father is to acknowledge him, worshiping in Spirit and Truth through Jesus Christ our Lord.
We are to abide in Christ, John 15; and producing fruit for the glory of God. The authority, power, and glory all flow from our Father through Christ Jesus. Our prayer, praise, and obedience flow from us back through Yeshua; Jesus Christ to our Father in heaven. The purpose of Matthew 23:9 is a direct challenge to humanistic endeavors, unbelief, and religious activity with no substance. Christ called out the scribes and Pharisees on this. He called out those who loved to be seen of men, called, and looked upon with respect for their titles of Master, Rabbi, or Father.
Mat 23:8-10
(8) But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
(9) And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
(10) Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
Scripture One is your Master even Christ and call no man your father
Furthermore, this challenges churches and denominations today to understand this. Jesus Christ is still challenging religiosity and the pride of men. He is challenging the arm of the flesh which both churches and religious institutions cling on too. In addition, he is calling out Christians to remind them to cling to the Lord and not man nor the arm of the flesh.
Call No Man Your Father
Thus, this section in Matthew 23 directly deals with the Jewish spiritual leadership, temple, and all those who walk as leaders in the time when Yeshua walked the earth. This section directly challenges the status quo of the Jewish ideals of faith, holiness, and truth. Yeshua challenges them and pronounces “Woes” upon them for their behavior and sins.
This is about the Jewish teachers and founders of schools, whereas in Israel the people were taught to look up to them. This title Father does not mean that we cannot call our physical earthly Fathers such as “my father”, or that you cannot have a “spiritual Father”.
Make no mistake, many Christians, and the churches they attend have sources in the arm of the flesh and are carnal. Yes, they may be rich; in a fancy church; nicely padded pews, beautiful crosses; but the source of all who are found in the Father through Jesus Christ is precisely that link. To be found in Christ Jesus and connected to our God and Father. One in Spirit; we in Christ Jesus; the Father in Him and in us. We, therefore, are to be one connected. It is as Jesus said in John fifteen “I am the vine; you are the branches” and again “without me you can do nothing”!
In the one scripture that deals with this, we find this scripture uses the word Father twice. The first one is directly pointing to “your father on earth”. The second Father is not only a description of someone, but specifically the Father in heaven. In this one verse we find the comparison of earth that is temporal to heaven which is everlasting. Both refer to the fact that on earth and in heaven there is one Father who created you and is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and Father of everything both in heaven and on earth. This verse deals with authority, power, and directly lets us know who our real Father in Heaven is. It tells us to whom we must honor and give all authority to. A point here, in scripture we find the word Father used 1126 times in 970 verses.
We, therefore, cannot deny the use of Father and the Father himself in scripture. We cannot deny Fathers that we have nor the spiritual Fathers who birthed us into faith. Nor can we deny our God and Father in Heaven. Jesus is pointing out that earthly schools, churches, and leadership all have but one source of authority, our Heavenly Father. The truth here is that faithful Teachers, Pastors, Prophets, Apostles, and churches themselves point men and women to look to our God and Father through Jesus Christ. It is Jesus Christ that leads us to the Father. For saith he “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no many comes unto the father but by me.” -John 14:6. Our Lord nor His Father has purposed the earthly organization itself as the headmaster rising above the Lord our God himself.
Call No Man Your Father
John the Revelator in chapter one of Revelation saw the Lord standing amid seven golden candlesticks; this is verse 13. Here we see a glorified Lord that says of himself in this context that he is: “the Almighty, Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, and having the keys of hell and death”. These phrases describe him as the absolute authority and power in the churches. It is through Him we find the Father. He also is seen with seven stars in his right hand along with the seven golden candlesticks. One represents the angels or messengers to those churches and the other is the seven churches themselves. Preceding this section, we find that the Lord tells John to write letters to the seven churches. These seven, represent the churches and his authority and power over those churches. In the churches are the people who are redeemed by faith in him through the blood of the covenant. This begins Revelation. The warnings to the churches follow, and that section ends with the final and absolute warning to the Laodicean Church itself. This is an ominous warning to a rich church living in a hedonistic society. Yet even here, there is a promise of reward for all who overcome this temptation.
In the Laodicean Church found in Revelation chapter three, we find the church that say’s “I am rich, increased with good, and have need of nothing”! This is typical of the earthly provision, but the comfort and truth of a church is not born out of carnal supplies and materialistic gain. This is what we are taught to measure success and gain by, our material success. The suggested “counsel to the church of Laodicea was to buy of “me gold tried in the fire”. This is the fire of tribulation. It is summed up by saying “as many as I love, I rebuke, and chasten”. This is followed by the command to be “zealous and repent”. Here we find this church standing in judgment by a chastening, but we also see the Lord here. He is not in the church at all. The scene finds him outside the church knocking on the door to come in. He could knock down the door, he is God. But he wants us to invite him, receive him in. If you do that, he will come in and make bread with you. This illustrates forgiveness, confession, love, comfort, and friendship; but also, closeness. The Prophet John said in John chapter one, that the Lord “went to his own and they received him not, but to as many as did receive him; to them gave the power to become the Sons of God; even to those who believe on his Name”. They were born not of the will of man, church membership, or denominational rank or name. The Spirit of God bore them. This in John One illustrates the truth of why the Lord was knocking. He wanted to be received back in. If they failed to open to him, repent, and have true fellowship with him; judgment would fall upon them.
Rev 3:17-22
(17) Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
(18) I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
(19) As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
(20) Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
(21) To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
(22) He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
Scripture Our Heavenly Father sent his only begotten Son
The truth to this is also found in Matthew 23. For Yeshua says, “be not called Rabbi: for one is your Master, Even Christ and all ye are brethren”, and again “neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ”. Verse 9 of Matthew 23 deals directly with the authority of our Father in Heaven. But we also find that both Rabbi and Master used here in this context given directly to the Jews of his days directly speaks of the relationship of the brethren who are to see Christ Jesus as their Master or Rabbi. Today we see him as our Savior and Lord and that relationship connects us to the Father. All brethren in Christ owe their redemption, lives, souls, and all they are to the fact that we are one in Christ Jesus and absolutely found in the Father through his Son.
There is no room for earthly Christian denominations, Universities, or churches or leadership to view themselves as being the Master or Rabbi or the Pastor or the Shepherd. Here I use these terms as absolute power. Sure, we have Christian ministers, Pastors, and churches; not to mention teachers, apostles, deacons, and others in the Christian faith. But anyone in Christ Jesus must make sure that their leadership, preaching, teaching, authority, and all they do owe allegiance to Jesus Christ who has joined us to the Father in Heaven. Thus, we pray, Our Father who art in Heaven.
It is time to stand firm in our Lord Jesus Christ to the glory of the Father. We will not tolerate evangelists, ministers, churches, denominations, or anyone else who glorifies the power of the arm of the flesh. In other words, we do not take unto ourselves the glory, power, and honor. All honor, power, and glory are unto Christ Jesus and our Father from whom all things flow.
Heavenly Father – Call No Man Your Father, he sent his only begotten Son to die for the sins of all men. No earthly Father can be compared to Him. Yet we do have Dads, husbands, and even those we call Father. But there is only one true Father, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Yeshua Ha Massiah.
- Finally, it is not the church, denomination, or name which will save you.
- Authority and Salvation is to be found in our Father in Heaven through Jesus Christ our Lord
- In all you do, live as unto the Lord, and give all glory and honor to Him who saved you!
- Be faithful unto him and follow his Commands and be faithful.
- Remember this is not about having a spiritual Father, one who begot you into Christ Jesus.
- Nor is it about your physical earthly Father who begot you through his wife who is your mother.
- This is a direct challenge and call out to all those who minister in Spiritual things concerning Christ Jesus; Yeshua HaMassiach.
In conclusion, let me mention that the Pope as being the Bishop of Rome is seen as the head of the Roman Catholic Church. The Bishop or Patriarch of Alexandra is also viewed as Pope and is the head of the Coptic church. The word Pope is from the Old English and comes from ecclesiastical Latin derived from the ecclesiastical Greek papas, ie. ‘Bishop, patriarch’, a variant of the Greek pappas or ‘father.’
While the Pope is head, he is seen as Father. Redemption nor salvation comes through him or the Roman Catholic church. The same applies to all denominations, churches, and men. There is but one name through which we are saved. Jesus [Yeshua] Christ the Son of our God and Father who gave himself as a ransom for many. This is not a castigation of any denomination or church; but understand all will be judged by the Lord for those things done, taught, and followed in their leadership in the Church of our Lord on this earth. -Pope, Pappas; ref English Oxford dictionaries on the definition of Pope.
I do not stand in judgment of men, nations, religions, or churches; but declare the Word of God. It is the Word which will judge men and all they do on that Last Great Day! – The Watchman Dana G Smith
Mat 23:2-10
(2) Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:
(3) All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
(4) For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
(5) But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
(6) And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
(7) And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
(8) But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
(9) And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
(10) Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

Thanks Watchman…yes, there is a lot of carnality in some churches today. And a lot of it has to do with pride. Jesus made that plain in Mathew 23. Wanting to be noticed of men, bing puffed up in pride, is not the way the Lord wants it to be. As you have stated, all authority comes from the Heavenly Father, whom a lot of false churches claim to be following. And if the Lord Jesus is knocking on that churches door, then they are not right with the Lord…it’s as simple as that.A while back, I was going to listen to a lecture given by a man named Gardner (Will Smith played him in The Pursuit of Happyness). He began by talking about whatever God one percieves…what??? This is the kind of wiggle room that draws people away from the TRUE God. I know that he was successful in business, but I turned off his lecture. I simply can not agree with someone talking about whatever god one percieves. The true Lord’s peace to you and Tower…Amen.
Thanks George for your comments. People need discernment, which is what you directly pointed out in your example. We need more who show this and follow it; true discernment. Shalom to you and Mercy and family; The Watchman n Tower
