This is about the Yellowstone Wyoming Ecosystem. An important issue, which was written some years back still is a viable warning to all those who love the outdoors. It is so important we featured it as a Classic Warn Radio Post. The Ecosystem in Yellowstone faces issues that has been going on for some years. This is the fight to save the verdant Yellowstone ecosystem from fish who were newcomers to the waters. There is no doubt that millions of visitors times ‘ad Infinium’ have visited the region. As a native to this state, I am no stranger to it. However, I also bask in the native outdoors around the state. The Yellowstone has always been in the hearts and minds of those who live in Wyoming. This fever for fishing and the outdoors also is found in nearby states like Montana where threats to the fishing ecosystem also exist. My Uncle used to tell stories of how they would go fishing in Lake Yellowstone in the fifties. It was a time when monster Lake trout filled the lake.

They would go to the rivers and catch 6-8 inch fish and then use them as bait to catch the monster fish. The line would be 50 pound test. One time my Uncle told me that when they were fishing using the bait mentioned above, the fishing pole dipped down hard and the line unwound fast from the spool. As he grabbed the pole and jerked all in one motion, the line tightened. Then in a few seconds of fighting the fish, the fifty pound test line went limp. The fish had broken the line.
Today people still go into the arena of the cratered National Park where the world’s largest volcano lies. In this habitat lie the greatest assortment of grizzlies, black bears, elk, moose, mountain sheep, mountain lion, coyote, foxes, wolves, bald eagles, and native trout in the nation. All of Yellowstone is pristine, natural, and in fact some of the finest regions where wildlife can be found to survive and prosper.
But in fact there is today an Alien threat to the region and I don’t mean visitors from other states, nations, or worlds. The entrance of a non-native species to the streams of Yellowstone is threatening the native fish that are there. These non-native trout originated from the ‘stocked streams of Montana’s Beartooth Mountains’ according to Park officials. The native fish in the Yellowstone eco-system are the cutthroat trout, fluvial arctic grayling, and mountain whitefish.
However in the past non-native fish like the rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, and lake trout were introduced into the park in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this was stopped later. Although many anglers in Wyoming have in the past fished for and caught the so called non-native trout species, they are native to Wyoming. But the Yellowstone eco system had a genetically pure Yellowstone Lake cutthroat trout. Many fishermen prefer these.
The genetic purity of these Yellowstone Lake cutthroat trout makes them extremely valuable; however, the population has been exposed to three stressors, including nonnative lake trout (Kaeding et al. 1996), the exotic parasite Myxobolus cerebralis (the cause of whirling disease; Koel et al. 2006a), and the effects of a continued drought across the Intermountain West.

The threats to the native Yellowstone fish are so evasive because the non-native trout grow larger and will eat the cutthroats who are smaller. Then there are the other threats like parasites and drought. The purpose is to keep the pristine native Yellowstone cutthroat. In order to do this Yellowstone National Park Biologists will stun and remove the native Yellowstone cutthroat from Soda Butte creek [One infected area]. They will then fill the creek with rotenone [a white crystalline insecticide] which will kill the remaining fish. Once the creek clears of the poison they will place the native fish back in the creek.
In Montana the problems also exist and this has forced the closure of 150 miles of the Yellowstone River and its tributaries. Officials have found thousands of dead fish that were killed by a microbial parasite that affects the kidneys of the fish and causes death. Because of the closure of so much of pristine Montana waters to fishing the annual 6 billion dollar income from the outdoor economy is threatened as well. The outdoor and fishing industry in Montana employs some 64,000 thousand people according to a Business Insider report.
There is no doubt that the measures taken by Yellowstone officials are drastic. In some cases anglers and others would not agree with killing off so many fish that are consider a viable sport fish like trout. However, the dangers to the natural habitat and to the fish are such that such measures are warranted. These seems to be the issue in these days, so many threats to the native environment, fish, animals, and of course threats to mankind.
