Who is Standing Guard?
Hezekiah represents a King who also had Isaiah as a major prophet at the time. Hezekiah chose to seek the LORD when threatened by Assyria. Assyria had conquered many lands, kings, and foreign gods. Yet, this pagan king and his army were defeated when he came against Israel. For he made a huge mistake, he blasphemed the LORD, ridiculed the people, and pridefully boasted he would take Jerusalem. This is exactly what nations like Iran are saying today against Israel and her people.
Isa 36:18-20
(18) Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
(19) Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
(20) Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
Who is Standing Guard?
It is purposeful, therefore, to not only see that God does deliver his people; but what is more, he can keep us today.
Psa 127:1-2
(1) A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
(2) It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
Who is Standing Guard?
The Psalm above reminds us that “Except the LORD build the house and will Keep the city”, the people within its walls build in vain and the watchman wakes the people in vain. Here is says plainly that sure, humans can build cities. Israel had a temple, priests, and lands. Yet they fell away from the LORD and served other gods. The Jewish people found out that resting on the arm of the flesh and serving other gods will not keep them safe.
The scripture in Psalm 127 is a stark reminder that you can serve and do whatever you want in life. But there are rewards for all people, whether they are rewards for evil doing or for doing good. In this there is only one God of Gods, and Lord of Lords. Today in the new covenant through Jesus [Yeshua] Christ we serve the Father and our God. While the old covenant has been fulfilled, it is not destroyed or outdated. It is fulfilled by the Messiah Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God.
Today as we discuss “Who is Standing Guard” it is to those believers in Jesus Christ to whom we speak. The examples of Hezekiah, though remind us that the enemy lurks and as Peter says; “your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” Therefore, it behooves us to “Be sober and to be Vigilant”!
1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
1Pe 5:9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Who is Standing Guard?
There are three commands Peter gives us:
Be sober: here the word sober is nepho [nay’ fo], meaning to abstain from wine. Here to keep sober. Remember the whore in Revelation 17, she has a golden cup full of abominations and the nations drink from it and are drunken on her delights. We are to abstain from this wine of the world and stay sober. Here the word sober directly is tied to watching or as in the days of Prophets of old, the role of a Watchman. He is on his watch, high on the walls. In the tower, he surveys the countryside for enemy troops or any sign of danger. When he see’s something he blows the shofar, shouts, and lets the people know. Applying this to you personally, you wake up to the danger and get your defenses ready to repel the invader. But most of the time, any enemy when met by a formidable defense will be sneaky. They will try to infiltrate the city and take it from within. The devil has done this with Israel by causing her to serve other gods. He has done this with Christianity in Lukewarm Laodicean churches. The result is the church has no power to resist and eventually the world and the whoredoms enter in. Yep, just like it occurred to Israel, it has occurred to Christianity today.
Be vigilant: While sober has a connotation of being watchful; vigilant is more direct here. It is gregoriuo [gray-gor-yoo’-o]. It means to keep away, that is, here to watch, be vigilant, be awake, and be watchful. Sober relates that you’re not to be drunken on the wine, abstain so you can be vigilant. Vigilance is absolutely no good if you’re not sure what you’re watching for. If you’re a drunk watchman, you will fall asleep if not fall off the wall and kill yourself. If your drunk on the lusts of the flesh and delights of the world then you are in error against the Lord Jesus Christ. Remember adulterers, fornicators, whoremongers, and idolators God will judge! This is just a brief list of things to abstain from. The point here is you cannot watch out for the enemy if your given over to his side. You won’t warn anyone, in fact you might persuade them that this enemy is no danger at all. You would open the gates and allow him to come in. This is precisely what has happened to many Christian families, churches, and America itself. Simply put in this nation the Watchman have fallen asleep.
Resist steadfast in the faith: Given that you’re awake and truly on the Lords side here; you can then resist the enemy. Resist here is anthistemi [anth-is’ -tay -mee], meaning to stand against. To oppose, to withstand his attacks. We don’t open our arms and let the enemy come inside our homes, churches, and cities or nation! We remove them, stop them at the borders [duh], and keep them away from our families. But we are to be steadfast here. This steadfast is steros [ster -eh -os’] meaning stiff, to be solid or stable. Are you firm or stiff in the faith of Jesus Christ? Are you committed to Him? Are you walking in His ways and following Him? The command is to be solid, firm, or stiff [unbendable] in your faith. That is, you don’t bend to every wind of doctrine, fable of mankind, nor the persuasion of wine from the harlot. You are firm, stable, and unbendable in the faith of Jesus Christ! Your moral conviction is absolute in the truthfulness of our Great God and Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. You believe, have faith, and you have fidelity towards your savior.
The question looms large today. Who is standing guard in your house and in your family? Who is guarding your city? Who is standing guard in your nation? All of these are pinpointed and accurate regarding American families, American churches, American cities, and America herself. But it is also pinpoint accurate regarding other nations. You cannot be safe if you let in those who disrespect your country. You cannot trust people who come into your city who want to overthrow it. In addition, you cannot trust people to enter your family if they are aiming to destroy the family, harm them, or turn them away from the Lord.
The question that is asked today is the exact reason America is in trouble. It is the reason we are divided. It is also the reason divorce is high, family units are destroyed, and the godlessness quotient is open ended. There are no loud voices standing against the tide of hate, sin, godlessness today. We have churches, but they are very silent and go about their own business.
And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward: (32) For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this. (33) Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it. (34) By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD. (35) For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake. (36) Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. (37) So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. (38) And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.
Isa 37:31-38 | Who is Standing Guard?
Churches and their leaders; not to mention Christians are not to be idle. We are to guard against, stand against, and be steadfast in that opposition to which will destroy. That is why the Lord directly challenged and warned the Laodicean church. He is challenging you today and the church today! He is asking “Who is standing Guard?” If the Lord is not building up your family, city, town, church, or nation; then all the fleshly attempts to salvage it will be of no avail. In one short word here, it is “vain” to do so! What say you?
And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; (15) I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. (16) So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. (17) Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: (18) I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. (19) As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. (20) Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come into him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
